For more than three decades, WCEI has been the leading provider of contemporary music, local news, weather, and hourly traffic reports to residents of the Mid-Shore and Eastern Shore. The station was founded in the 1970's. WEMD-AM, the AM affiliate of WCEI, was founded two decades earlier in the 1950's.

The Clark Broadcasting Company bought the radio station in 1981. WCEI was the first radio station the company acquired. Ten years later, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted the station a license for a quadruple increase in power. The station is now a part of First Media Radio. Currently, WCEI has broadcast signal that reaches Talbot, Queen Anne's, Dorchester, Caroline, and Kent County. The tower height was increased in 2006 after the FCC approved the addition.

As WCEI, enters a broadcast level unparalleled by any other Mid-Shore station, the goal continues to be remaining the dominant radio station and with the largest signal on the Mid-Shore as well as becoming a more prominent station in Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
